The meeting was brought to order by Beckie Harkey at 1:38 p.m.

The prior minutes from January 4, 2022, were sent out via email to all members.  President Beckie asked members if there were any corrections, to which there were none.  A motion was made to accept the minutes, and passed unanimously.

Beckie asked “What do you know, and when should you know it?”   The answer is simple = RULES.  When should you know them = ALWAYS.  Golf has the same principles that apply as baseball, basketball, soccer, etc.  They all incorporate rules.  If someone is constantly asking what to do, and what to do where, it causes the person who is trying to explain to lose focus and attention to their own game.

Stroke Play is not the same as Match Play.    It is easy to Google for the basic concepts, and is totally different than stroke play.  Match play is hole by hole.

We are entering our competition time with the Solheim Cup, President’s Cup, and Club Championship.  Be prepared – read the rules!   There is always a “get out of jail free card” if you are not sure of the rule, which is to play two (2) balls and ask the Pro Shop later the rule and adjust your score card accordingly.  Playing two balls is only an option in stroke play, not match play.   It would do everyone some good to practice Match Play on a practice day before their matches too.  The Pro Shop would be more than happy to mark your card.  Promise me you will take some time to google Match Play and read the rules.

Carol Pierce from Dove Mountain has approached The Views 18 Hole League as they are trying to resurrect the Ironwood Club.   Carol has asked if we would like to be in this group.  Currently she had five clubs who have agreed, and is also going to ask other groups like Skyline, AZ National, Omni, La Paloma, Catalina and Saddlebrook.   There was a resounding “yes” to joining, and 20 people raised their hand in solid interest.

The cost would be $55/per person for golf and $15 to go toward prizes - $70 total.  It would be ABC, and half the field would play.  They would like to see higher handicap individuals play, to avoid the same people who play Catalina Cup competing, allowing more people an opportunity to spread their wings.  This is a commitment to be involved, and we are looking for people who truly would like to do this.   It is yet to be determined how often the play would take place.  Again, this is a commitment to make this happen, with a lot of work behind the scenes and time on the players and the organizers’ part to participate and host.

Vice President - Rob Ranson

Rob introduced Cheryl Reddy to the group.  Cheryl was born in Connecticut, but her spouse was in the military for 24 years, followed by 20 years in the public sector.  She laughingly said she has lived in over 23 places, but the last five had been in Saddlebrook.  They have now moved to Splendido, and she has enjoyed having her place cleaned weekly, and not cooking a single meal since July!  Cheryl has appreciated the warm welcome from our group.

Rob reported we now have 70 members – it was at 71, but one individual decided to not join our group.

Treasurer – Pattie Horning

The most current budget was sent to all members via email prior to the meeting for review.  There were no questions from our members concerning the content.

Pattie noted TVWGC had elected to purchase a legacy brick for $150 last year in honor of the Veterans of America.  The brick is located on the walkway between the lawn at the Views and the pickle ball courts.  If someone donated another legacy brick and named a club, then a percentage of the funds would be given to that club, and TVWGC received $150 that was donated in our name, and we received that check for our use.

The Ball Drop funds were also distributed to clubs, and our club received $450.

Handicap Chair – Pat Stark

No report.

Tournament Chair – Cathy Morrow

Low Net gifts were distributed from January:  Helen Garren, Nancy Sopwith, Kelli Mannon and Sue Devaney.

No other reports were made.

Rules – Barbara Hall

Hole 8 is to be Ground Under Repair until further notice from damage created by the javelinas, located in the first grass bunker to the right of the green.  Only this area is GRU.

Hole No. 12 has a penalty area right off the tee.  If you go into the penalty area, you must determine the nearest point of relief – that is where the ball last crossed into the penalty area.  Even if it hit a rock and it dove directly right, you use the point where it crossed into the area to determine your nearest point of relief.  If you feel confident, you can play it out of the penalty area.

However, should you elect to hit in the penalty area and the ball goes into a bush, you need to return to the tee box, as you cannot take relief in a penalty area.

Count        1      Hit off the Tee

                                    2      Hit into the Bush

3      Take it out of the penalty area

4      Hit from the tee box

Sometimes you should not be a hero, and bring it back to the tee box from the start!

You cannot take a provisional, as you have to go down and look at it.  Only on holes 1 and 9 in our 18‑hole ladies league is a golfer allowed to use a provisional ball.

Also, the Views 9-hole league rules are different than the 18-hole league rules, we use the USGA for our 18-hole ladies league at the Views.

As always, play 2 balls if in doubt and ask the Pro Shop later for a ruling and adjust your scores accordingly.  Do not turn in your score cards without being sure the rules have been vetted.

A concern was raised about the pace of play.  It is everyone’s job in the group to be prepared to play.  Your social time is after the game has finished, rather than during the game.   Remember others are waiting on you!  We have all played this course enough to know where to hit, so you should have all your equipment ready for your next shot.  If in doubt, take two clubs with you to avoid time returning to your cart to retrieve the proper club.  It is also proper to send two players ahead to start the next hole while the other two are finishing if your team is behind to keep it moving and stay in position.  When playing a scramble, it may not be necessary for everyone to putt out to obtain your lowest score in the group!  Let’s always try to keep at or below a four-hour round.

AGA Representative – Eileen Buskirk

Catalina Cup – Darlene Lamb and Patti Thompson

Patti said at the recent Catalina Cup, we beat Skyline with a score 58.5 out of 108.  We have now completed five rounds and have five remaining.  February 14, 2022 is our next match at the LA Paloma.

The format is a two-person best ball match play each week, and we send 6 people to play.  To qualify for the Catalina Cup play, you must have a handicap of 26 or less.  If your handicap is over 26, you will play to a 26.

Cure for Cancer – Becky Harkey, Rob Ranson, Debbie Huffman

Debbie Huffman spoke about the March 13 Cancer Tournament which is being led by the 9-hole ladies league this year.   Cancer has touched many of our lives, some are very personal, and other battles have affected our family or friends.  We need your help in continuing the fight for more cures and research.

Carol Johnson of the 9-hole ladies league is requesting when you obtain sponsors or item donations to let her know, in order to maintain the current donor spreadsheet.  At this time, the 9-hole ladies league has raised $25,000 and the Sun City Foundation has matched $6,000.

The 18-hole ladies league will be responsible for the raffle, and everyone is responsible for raising money – so be please ask for donations from Chiropractors, massage places, hairdressers, and other businesses you visit, so we are able to gather lots of items for the raffle.  The same goes for monetary donations – contact realtors, accountants, car dealerships, insurance agents, etc.  If a firm wants to sponsor a hole it is $125.   Letters to request donations and the donation forms will be sent out tonight for your use in soliciting tournament sponsorships and donations.

Raffle tickets will be available for a Merchandise Raffle (White Raffle Tickets) and a 50/50 Raffle (Green Raffle Tickets). The committee will be asking for volunteers to sell these raffle tickets before league shotguns, on Saturdays when there are more outside players, at Happy Hours, other clubs and organizations that you may be a part of, and to family and friends.  If a sponsor that you approach does not want to "gift" the Cure for Cancer, maybe you can sell them some Raffle Tickets!

If you would like to donate a gift basket, please let us know the contents which aids in noting the descriptions of the basket for facilitating staging the tables.  We ask the value of the basket be at a minimum of $25.   Wine, food, treats, and more alcohol are always welcome!

Players decide on their own team and can register through Golf Genius.  There are 7:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. times.

The Men’s club is sponsoring the Par 3 Challenge.  Please participate, as they are volunteering their time to gather funds for the cause also.  It is a donation, but always a fun challenge.

Golf Advisory – Mimi Hutton

Michael Hoff and Mark Wade sent an email, noting they will be overseeding the fairways and greens around the tees this September.   It is on their schedule, at the recommendation of the AGA, to rotate not overseeding every 8-10 years.

Other items of note:

  • They will also be Ground Under Repair (GUR) marked in different areas
  • Rolling the greens
  • Repairing some of cart paths with new concrete
  • Cactus on Hole 16 has been trimmed
  • Crowned holes – Mike said the grass just needs to grow!
  • Golf Survey is going out, so everyone please respond
  • Getting new score cards in the spring
  • Pebbles on the green – they blow the greens every day in the morning
  • Hole 15 – tree cut down

There will not be another meeting until March.

It was requested to inquire about holding some places for ladies to practice on the driving range on Ladies’ Day.  Very common that we have to wait for quite some time for the men to release the spots.

The next play will be at Saddlebrook Ranch on March 7.  The deadline for this is February 17, so please sign up early with the information noted above.

Darlene Lamb/Dee Ruelas/Nikki White – Member Guest

Let’s Par-Tee!!!!    This is the theme for this year’s Member/Guest being held on Tuesday, March 8.

The format will be 6-6-6 with games for each 6 holes as 2-person best ball, alternate shot, and scramble.  The cost is $160 per team.  If you have an annual membership, then you will be refunded the golf fee of $52.  There will be no more than a 10-stroke difference; should there be a wider gap, you will be required to play down to a differential of 10 to the lowest handicap.  If a player does not have an established handicap, they will play to a zero handicap.

The main reason to play is for the company, golf and food and social aspect.  If you need a partner, you may ask a 9-hole league player.  Please register, and we may be able to find you an outside player who want to join us!  PLEASE sign up for this fun day.  The prizes have been ordered, and we want everyone to enjoy themselves!
